Rey grinned like he’d just unlocked the ultimate cheat code. Without missing a beat, he leaned forward and gave the electrified eel a little nudge. The creature zipped forward like a turbocharged submarine, and Rey practically clung on, adrenaline and wild excitement coursing through him.
The water blurred into streaks of neon as they shot past clusters of sparkling coral. Rey’s mind raced with ideas—maybe he could hack the treasure hunt’s code by riding this glitchy beast right into its heart. “Alright, you crazy, electric bastard, let’s see how fast you can go,” he muttered, half-laughing and half-cursing.
The main objective of the event was to collect these special materials called tea-egg pearls. They were called tea egg pearls because of the special patterns on top of these pearls. They were quite famous because these things helped in contemplating one’s dao.
They also helped in the event’s progress. The more pearls, the higher the points, and whichever factor obtained the maximum points, they would win the treasure hunt. It was as simple as that. But there was a catch.
Once you collect a pearl, you start glowing in the dark waters. One would become a beacon for attracting all sorts of trouble. Also, the pearls could be consumed instantly to become stronger. But these consumed pearls did not count towards the total points. They still make you a beacon with the glowing aura, though.
Rey’s grip on the spear tightened as he spotted something shining in the distance. “Hey, slow down,” he muttered, though his pulse was already racing. He commanded the eel to go towards the pearls. The beast instantly shot forward as soon as it saw the pearls. It looked like it was not just the humans who coveted these pearls.
Rey lunged for the pearl without a second thought. His fingers closed around it as if it were an old friend, and he couldn’t help but let out a cocky laugh. “Wow, that was easy,” he muttered, admiring the gem’s flawless surface for a split second. But before he could revel in his effortless win, the water around him exploded with raw, predatory energy.
In the blink of an eye, ten vicious sharks materialized, their eyes cold and hungry, slicing through the dark water like silent assassins. The sharks circled him, their razor-sharp teeth glinting under the pulsating glow of his newly acquired tea-egg pearl. Rey’s heart pounded hard as he tightened his grip on the epic-grade spear, every muscle tensing for the fight of his life.
What followed was a blur of adrenaline and chaos. For several minutes, Rey danced with death beneath the dark waves. He ducked and dodged, parrying the sharks’ relentless attacks with quick, desperate thrusts. Each swing of his spear sent bursts of electric energy arcing through the water, and every dodge was a narrow escape from snapping jaws.
Just when the situation looked its bleakest, the water exploded in a flash of divine light. Cutting through the turmoil, Alex burst onto the scene. Her armor shone like a beacon, and her sword blazed with righteous fury as she carved through the shark pack with swift, surgical precision.
With a few decisive swings, Alex forced the sharks into retreat, their predatory formation dissolving into the dark abyss. She skidded to a halt beside Rey, who was still reeling from the intense battle. Breathing hard and dripping adrenaline, he looked up to see her smirking, half-teasing, half-relieved.
“Can’t do anything without your sis, huh?” she chided, her tone light but carrying an unmistakable edge of concern. Rey managed a crooked grin, the taste of danger and victory mingling in his mouth as he clutched the glowing pearl tightly.
“Whatever. I would have dealt with them, you know. It was just taking time because of this damn water. I hate it. I hate it.”
“Oh, shut up, you spoilt brat. Now, give me a ride.”
“I don’t think your fat ass can fit in-“
Alex grimaced.
“I mean, two of us will slow down my buddy. How about I find another one for you?”
Alex rolled her eyes as she swam a few paces away, already scouting for another mount. Rey let out a derisive chuckle, shaking his head. “Yeah, right. You always think you’re so perfect, don’t you?”
“Keep dreaming, brat,” Alex shot back over her shoulder, smirking. “I’m just here to keep you from getting yourself killed. Besides, you know I’m the best backup you’ve got.”
Moments later, Rey reappeared with a second beast—a sleek, armored sea turtle with a shell that shimmered like a circuit board. “Behold, your new chariot,” he declared, raising an eyebrow at her. “Two rides are better than one. Now, hop on before those sharks decide to throw us another surprise party.”
“By the way, what are we doing about these pearls?” Rey asked Alex as she was curiously eyeing the sea turtle. He would be lying if he said he wasn’t tempted to use them right then and there.
“You know we need those pearls for points, little bro,” she replied, her tone mixing playful sarcasm with genuine caution. “Remember, the goal is to rack up points. Consuming them early might give you a temporary boost, but it won’t count toward our win—and besides, it might make you an even bigger target. So hand them over to me.”
“Ya. Ya. I understand.” Rey let out a sigh and handed the pearls to her. The next second, Alex shamelessly tossed the pearls into her mouth.
Rey’s eyes widened in shock and betrayal.
“What? I never said I couldn’t handle being a target. Do you know how difficult it is to have a husband who constantly outshines you? A single idiot like you would never understand the problems married life brings.”
“You bitch!” Rey’s face twitched. “This is not fair. You cannot take mine. Why don’t you go find some pearls on your own?”
“Oh, stop arguing like a brat and stand guard for me. I feel some breakthroughs coming.” Alex happily whistled and closed her eyes as the divine glow around her started becoming brighter.
“You fucking bully!” Rey’s heart hurt, but ultimately, he did not care. He silently stood guard for his sister as she quickly processed the pearls.
